Previously looked after children refers to any young people who are previously looked after and who are subject to an adoption order, a special guardianship order (SGO) or child arrangement order.
The Virtual School provides advice and guidance to schools in supporting these young people as they transition and move through the education system, providing continuity and expertise when it really matters. Please note we are happy to give general advice however if you wish to discuss a particular child and share their details, please ensure that you have obtained parental consent.
The DfE has extended the role of the Virtual School to include supporting Kinship Carers. Kinship carers are people other than parents who are looking after a child for 28 days or more at a time (this includes grandparents, other family members and family friends).
These carers may require support as these children:
- May have experienced trauma
- Could be vulnerable and disadvantaged
- Could present with challenging behaviour
Kinship Carers require support because their willingness to help, introduces a big change into their family dynamics both physically and emotionally, which if not well managed can impact negatively on their own mental health.
The Virtual School is available to help both Kinship Carers and PLAC in the capacity of signposting, information and guidance. We also share information on training and support opportunities.
